But Lazarus was Dead Dead

On this podcast episode, Yemi and Philia discuss the miracle Jesus performed when he brought Lazarus back to life (John 11:1-44). In this miracle story, Jesus, upon hearing of the news of the extreme sickness of his friend, waits a few days before going to his aide. During the time Jesus waited, his friend, Lazarus, died. Although Jesus could have healed Lazarus while he was sick and alive, he waited until after he died to perform a very public miracle of resurrection. This miracle foreshadows Jesus' death and his power over death. The waiting period ensured there was no doubt in the fact that Lazarus was dead and that only one with power beyond the grave can bring him back. Jesus makes the statement to Lazarus's sisters that he is the resurrection and the life (John 11:25) before he calls Lazarus back from the dead. This miracle is a clear indication that Jesus has the power to give us the life he promised, everlasting life. "Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live" (John 11:25). This is the promise we cling to. It is the hope that we lean on when people are taken from this world, from our lives. We are in expectant anticipation for this to be fulfilled and for it to be fulfilled for us, we must believe in Jesus. Now is the time to be a living testimony of your faith so that others may believe and have the hope that sustains us.
