A Humbled Seat at the Table
The Parable of the Lowest Seat at the Table is found in Luke 14:7-14. Jesus tells this parable to give us a lesson on humility. He explains that the one who chooses the exalted seat at the table may be embarrassed when told to move for a person of higher stature. He says, instead, pick the lowest seat and then you may be asked to move to a seat of higher stature. He further says that those you invite to the table should be those who do not have anything to give in return for this is a true kingdom style gift. With this humility lesson, the actions Jesus asks us to take will ensure that not only will we avoid embarrassment at the banquet table of a friend, we also can claim a seat at table of righteousness. Jesus tells us not to show up with a puffed up chest but if we enter with a humbled posture, we can enjoy a title of honor.
